Colt slid away from the sleeping Glen. He got up and called Slate.

“What the hell do you mean he’s an outlaw doctor?”

“He helped me. I needed to get a job and he helped me by disguising my nature.” He stopped wondering if anyone from SSU or Homeland Security could be listening. “Anyway, he helped me and now I want to help him.”

“Why are you whispering?”

“He’s asleep.”

“Christ, are you sleeping with him?”

“That’s not relevant.”

“So in other words, yeah, you are.” Slate fell silent. “When was the last time we saw each other?”

“Eight years, maybe?”

“And the last time we talked?”

“Um. Maybe two years?”

“And you call me first time for years out of the blue for a favor.”

“Yep. Maybe you should point out that I don’t even know where you’re living either.”

Slate laughed, or at least Colt hoped that grating sound was laughter. “You are a pain in the ass.”

“Listen, before you hang up on me, you should know something. Totally unrelated. Except, oops, yeah, it’s about a relation. We have a nephew.”

“What?”

“After Gunnar went ape—”

“I’m sorry about that, Colt. You shouldn’t have had to deal with that.”

He swallowed, coughed, surprised by the flush of emotion Slate’s words brought. “Okay, but listen. Sometime after he beat the tar out of me and before he killed himself, he asked me to make sure this ex-girlfriend of his was okay. Or rather look for her and her baby. Anyway, I did. And I’m almost sure we have a nephew.”

“Crap.” Slate fell silent. “I guess that’s not such a huge surprise. We might not be real good at reproduction, but that guy drilled every female on the planet. You going to tell Mom and Dad?”

“They might feel like they have to come north to see the boy and I think that’s not what Gunnar wanted. I know he didn’t want me to tell you guys, but I figure anything happens to me, you should know.”

“I know we’re not big on family but that’s absurd.”

“Here’s the big problem. I kind of suspect the kid’s mom doesn’t know Gunnar was from shifter stock.”

“Jesus, what a bastard Gunnar was. Do you think there’s some chance the baby might have some abilities? Wait, it can’t be much of a baby anymore. Gunnar’s been gone almost two years.”

“The kid is almost three. I have a job at the center where he goes. No, I have no clue if the boy’s a shifter. I can’t stick around to figure it out. Funny, since helping me get that job was what’ll get my friend fired. That and some other stuff.” He sighed. “Before I clear out I should go say goodbye to all my little peanuts from the center, right? A private chat? That wouldn’t be so suspicious, right? I can tell her then.”

“Maybe you should wait. Call me later. I need to talk to my wife. Hey, you know I got married, right?”

Colt laughed. “Asshole.”

“Don’t make a move without talking to me,” his brother growled.

Colt wasn’t about to agree to that, but Slate didn’t seem to notice he hadn’t.
